Anthony Rizzo still unsure of returning to Yankee lineup: 'It sucks'

Anthony Rizzo missed the entire series for the Yankees in St. Louis, leaving the Bombers without two of their most powerful bats, as Rizzo was sidelined alongside Giancarlo Stanton.

Rizzo, still battling lower back tightness that he felt while taking batting practice last week, isn’t sure if he will be ready to go by Monday’s series opener against the Mariners, though the Yankees are getting into desperation mode to start pulling out wins after dropping five straight since the trade deadline.

“We’ll try to just be smart,’’ Rizzo said. “It’s frustrating, whether you’re winning or losing. It sucks. It’s part of baseball. It’s better now than later.”

The Yanks lost two of the three games to the Cardinals by one run, and were down by just one heading into the ninth inning during Sunday’s finale. The Yanks left 12 men on base in Sunday’s loss and couldn’t find the big home-run blow, which Rizzo has delivered in regularity so far this season, so his presence could have made the weekend look a lot different.

Instead, the Yanks will have to wait and see if Rizzo can be a factor at all in the next series.
