Brian Cashman told reporters on Sunday that the decision to not accept Aroldis Chapman’s reasoning for skipping Friday’s team workout was made by Aaron Boone.
The punishment? Being left off the ALDS roster and potentially ending his Yankees career.
“During that conversation…Boone made the decision to just tell him to stand down and stay home,” Cashman said. “You gotta be all in at this time of year. It’s disappointing.”
Cashman supported the decision, and while the team hasn’t ruled out Chapman to be part of a potential ALCS should the Yanks advance, they are considering other disciplinary action.
“He was due to pitch a live BP to get his work in as he was competing for a spot on the roster as well as facing our hitters to give them that type of competition as we navigate the off days between the Wild Card Series and our Division Series,” Cashman said. “It’s just disappointing. We’re gonna have what we have here and the people that are competing and dying to be on this roster and want to be on this roster. Even though those decisions haven’t been made yet, he chose to be absent.”
Chapman was a borderline case to make the roster as it was, considering his notable control issues since last season, which continued into 2022 along with a knee infection that stemmed from a new tattoo and landed him on the IL.
Now, he is guaranteed not to be a part of the roster, and is back in Miami after bailing on a live batting practice that he was supposed to throw on Friday.
“He was scheduled to be here Friday as part of our workout with the live, was not, and not what I thought was an acceptable excuse, so I’ve had him stay away for now,” Boone said. “Just felt like him not being here was not OK, and it was best for him to stay away for now.”
