Yankees' Domingo German, Aroldis Chapman have successful rehab outings Tuesday

The Yankees had two positive rehab outings on Tuesday night, Domingo German making his second overall rehab start with Double-A Somerset and Aroldis Chapman making his third overall outing (and possibly last) at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

German started Somerset’s game against Reading and threw 43 pitches (29 strikes), going 3 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out three. German allowed a two-out double in the first, then retired seven in a row before yielding a leadoff single in the fourth – but he got the next batter to fly out before departing, and reliever Mitch Spence stranded the runner at first.

The righty had begun his rehab assignment on June 22 with Low-A Tampa, throwing 40 pitches over three scoreless one-hit innings. He is on turn to once again pitch on Sunday, with both Somerset and Scranton scheduled to be home.

The Yankees are now eight days into German’s 30-day rehab clock, so it’s possible he could get up to four more rehab outings before having to be activated.

As for Chapman, he moved up after two scoreless innings with Somerset over the weekend and was just as dominant for the RailRiders, striking out two in a scoreless sixth inning Tuesday night.

Chappy followed Jhony Brito on the mound and threw seven of his 13 pitches for strikes, inducing a flyout on a 2-0 pitch before a pair of strikeouts on 2-2 offerings. He now has three scoreless innings with four strikeouts and just one hit allowed over his three rehab outings.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone hinted Tuesday that Chapman could be activated after the third outing, but it won’t be until at least Thursday in Houston; the Yankees instead added RHP Ryan Weber to the bullpen on Wednesday, after optioning Tuesday spot starter JP Sears back to Triple-A.
