Hal Steinbrenner stirred up more anger from Yankee fans on Thursday, after he was heard on The Show podcast with Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of the New York Post saying that he doesn’t look at seasons as a failure if it doesn’t end in a championship.
Boomer can’t understand why that comment would garner such a reaction from the fanbase, who have to be “entitled” if they can’t find any satisfaction in being a relevant team every season for decades.
“Since I’ve been here at this radio station, for 16 years, they have always been relevant,” Boomer said. “Everybody wants to be a hard ass. Of course we want a championship…if I were a Yankee fan, yes I’d be frustrated, but I also know that I expect to be good every year and have a chance to win every year, which is what they have.
“They are always in the mix, and that’s all you can ask for. Look what happened to Philadelphia last year…meanwhile, Aaron Judge is getting booed at home during the playoffs. To me, that is entitlement by a fanbase. I just have a hard time with that.”
Gio doesn’t agree, and believes there is a difference when it comes to a franchise like the Yankees. Consistent relevance is nice, but there is a difference between that and waiting nearly 15 years for a title.
“Relevancy is not the goal for the Yankees,” Gio said. “The goal is getting to the World Series and winning them, and they haven’t done that in 14 years.”
