The Yankees finally had the offensive outburst they had been missing in recent days, scoring nine runs despite leaving 12 men on base in Sunday’s series finale against the Cardinals.
But when things aren’t going your way, losses have a way of finding you. This time, it was Frankie Montas and the bullpen faltering in a 12-9 defeat for New York’s fifth straight loss of the season.
“We’re definitely going through it right now,” DJ LeMahieu said. “Frustrated with how we’ve played, but I still feel really good about our team and how we’ve done this year as a whole.”
On Saturday, when Domingo German survived some early trouble to allow just one run, the offense was shut down by Jordan Montgomery in a 1-0 loss, and the opposite happened on Sunday, as this Yankees team that found ways to win no matter what earlier in the season is now finding all kinds of new ways to lose.
“Seems like when we get a good pitching game we don’t hit, and vice versa,” LeMahieu said. “These last five games we’ve been kind of grinding like that.”
The Yankee lead in the AL East is down to single digits with just under two months to play, and a big four-game set with the second-place Blue Jays looms next week. Between now and then, the Yanks can only hope to turn things around so that four-game series isn’t as big as it could potentially be if things continue to go wrong.
“We need to play better,” Josh Donaldson said. “At the end of the day, we still feel very good about our team. It’s a little slide right now and we need to get back on track and continue to play hard.”
