Boomer on Josh Naylor celebration: 'Sportsmanship…has been thrown out the window'

Count Boomer Esiason among those who weren’t a fan of Josh Naylor’s controversial home run celebration after he took Gerrit Cole deep on Sunday night.

Naylor, who did a rock-the-baby dance while calling the Yankee ace his “little son,” represents a group of players that don’t pay any mind to sportsmanship, says Boomer.

“It’s not all young players. I don’t want to paint the broad picture,” Boomer said. “But there’s been a much greater emphasis on individual celebration in a lot of sports over the past 10 years.

“Sportsmanship, the respect issue, all of that kind of crap has been thrown out the window by a lot of these players. They don’t really care. They just want their moment. They want to be on ESPN highlights. They grew up watching all this stuff. This kind of nonsense is expected. What are you gonna do?”

Gio says a potential course of action would be to issue warnings to players who take celebrating too far, much like pitchers who are warned after a pitch comes too close to a batter with what umpires deem as poorly intended.

“How about giving a team a warning for acting like a fool,” Gio said. “And then stopping it before anything even starts?”
