The Yankees have publicly made it known that they want Aaron Judge back in pinstripes for the rest of his career, but could there be differing levels of commitment to making that happen within the front office?
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, “some” within the organization believe Hal Steinbrenner is “willing to chase” Judge in free agency to a level in which Brian Cashman is not, which would continue a trend of Cashman’s where the longtime GM isn’t afraid to draw a line in the sand in terms of where he will go to keep a homegrown star once they reach free agency.
It was done with Robinson Cano in 2013, and it was done with Derek Jeter in 2010. Jeter ultimately returned, while Cano did not, and now, Cashman could have a price in mind where he is unwilling to cross if a bidding war with the Giants reaches a particular number when it comes to Judge.
Of course, Steinbrenner is the one who cuts the checks, and if he is set on keeping Judge and wants to change the perception of himself among many fans, who believe he is not willing to spend like his father, then he will have the say in what the team offers Judge.
In the end, it will come down to whether or not Judge wants to remain a Yankee or not.
