JP Sears joins rare Yankees company with latest shutout, immediately gets sent down

JP Sears was called up for another spot start on Tuesday night to give the Yankees’ main rotation arms an extra day to rest during the team’s stretch of 20 games in as many days, and all Sears did was toss 5.2 scoreless innings in a 2-1 victory for New York.

Then, shortly after the score went final, Sears was sent right back down to Triple-A.

The lefty shut down the league-worst A’s offense (which is last in the league in the OPS department), extending his scoreless streak to 12.2 innings in the majors this season, which he has done over two starts and two relief appearances.

The 26-year-old lefty became just the third pitcher in franchise history to toss at least five scoreless innings in each of his first two big-league starts. The other two were Slow Joe Doyle way back in 1906, and the other was Luis Gil, who did it just last season.

Sears is back in the minors, but his efficiency gives the Yanks an encouraging fill-in whenever the rotation needs a break, or if the team wants to cut back on Luis Severino or Nestor Cortes Jr.’s innings down the road.
