Luis Severino placed on IL with low grade lat strain

UPDATE: The Yankees placed Severino on the IL with a low grade right lat strain. He suffered a grade two lat strain in 2019 that caused him to miss extended time.

Luis Severino had an MRI on his right shoulder on Thursday afternoon, and while the Yankees have yet to reveal the results as of pre-game media availability, it appears as if Sevy is headed to the injured list.

The right-hander left Wednesday night’s game prior to the third inning with “right shoulder tightness,” and Yankees manager Aaron Boone was optimistic yet blunt when asked Sevy’s status prior to Thursday’s game.

“He’s had his MRI, and we’re waiting on the doc to give us a real good idea of what we’re looking at,” Boone said. “I would say it’s likely an IL just with the timeline, but hoping it’s something that’s not too serious.”

The timeline for the Yankees is actually fortuitous if Sevy does go on the IL. Boone indicated he could miss a couple starts there” if so, but the Yankees could, in theory, use their 27th man for next Thursday’s doubleheader on a starter to skip Severino’s spot – and between that, the All-Star break, and an off-day on June 25, the Yankees wouldn’t need a true fifth starter until June 30 at the latest.

Severino would be IL eligible as of Thursday, so his 15 days would be up June 28 – and the righty is hopeful that’s all it would be.

“It was a little sore this morning but I could probably play catch,” Sevy said. “I’m not an expert in injuries, but I don’t think it’s bad.”

Boone also noted that Domingo German will make his rehab start as scheduled with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, and he is another possibility to slot in for one of the five games in four days after the break if necessary.

The Yankees optioned LHP JP Sears, who threw 3 2/3 innings behind Severino Wednesday, to Triple-A after the game, and while the injury means he could come right back in theory, Boone said the Yankees were planning to activate Jonathan Loaisiga to take that roster spot, and Ryan Weber is in the clubhouse from Triple-A as a possible reciprocal move for Severino going on the IL.
