Nestor Cortes was in trouble in the top of the fourth in Friday’s game two, loading the bases after a run had already scored, as the Guardians threatened to take the lead.
Cortes escaped with a play that was wild even for his standards.
In a season that already included a face-first dive into first base, Cortes fielded a comebacker from Myles Straw from against his body and high over his head, nabbing the bouncer with his glove arm fully extended above his head as he fell hard to the mound below on his back.
Quickly, Cortes twisted from his backside and bounced a throw to Anthony Rizzo at first, who was able to field the throw and just get a foot on the bag to retire Straw, end the inning, and prevent Cleveland from tying the game and getting a chance for more with the bases still loaded.
Cortes was fired up after the escape, and those following along on Twitter were in amazement.
"Under this body, there's a guy that's athletic." – Nestor Cortes, April 2022.
