Nestor Cortes looked strong again for the Yankees on Wednesday night, allowing just one run over five innings of work while striking out seven and dropping his season ERA to 2.70.
The night before, Yankee ace Gerrit Cole was taken deep three times, allowing four runs over six innings of work in an eventual 10-inning win for New York.
Cole, who pitched six innings, saw his season ERA rise to 3.30.
It was more evidence to Gio that Cortes should be the Yankees’ game one starter of a playoff, series, but is convinced the Yanks wouldn’t bring themselves to make such a move only because of Cole’s salary.
“I’ve been saying this for months now,” Gio said. “The Yankees would never do it. The Yankees would never have him start game one, but they should. And the reasons why they’re not having them do it aren’t good enough.”
