Boomer Esiason said on Monday that he wanted to see the Yankees call up Oswald Peraza, move Anthony Volpe to second base, and trade two-time All-Star Gleyber Torres to free up that second base spot.
BT is in full agreement with Boomer, though he says it’s likely something he would focus on this winter.
“You’re not giving Gleyber Torres $100 something million, at least I’m not,” BT said. “I would love to see Peraza at short, Volpe at second, and Gleyber Torres bringing back an arm.”
Torres still hasn’t been able to find his star form from his first two seasons in the majors, currently holding a .756 OPS on the year, slightly above league average, with nine home runs. Meanwhile, Peraza is tearing it up in Triple-A, and while Volpe is still struggling with the Yanks, the 22-year-old is considered to be one of their future pillars. So, Torres is expendable as a free agent after next season, but BT wouldn’t make the move just yet.
After all, Peraza’s big numbers in the minors doesn’t guarantee that he will immediately be an upgrade over Volpe and Torres.
“Timing is important, and there’s no rhyme or reason,” BT said. “It’s not basketball. It’s different. These Mets prospects were raking when they got brought up here. Now none of them are raking. Alvarez has had some timely three-run home runs, now he’s batting .237. Baty’s numbers have dwindled. Vientos hasn’t gotten much of a shot, but he hasn’t done a whole lot. Volpe had a spring like I’ve never seen…and he’s hitting .188. So you don’t know.”
Tiki is also in agreement, and believes the Yankees should trade Torres rather than sign him to a new deal.
“You’re not paying him,” Tiki said. “So you might as well get some value for him while you can.”
