Sal: Yankees will have best top three hitters in baseball 'by far' once Anthony Volpe bats leadoff

Anthony Volpe clubbed a three-run home run in Monday’s win over the Marlins, raising his season OPS to a robust 1.154 in the early going.

As the young shortstop continues to post some of the best numbers in the American League to start the season, BT and Sal wonder when the Yankees will make the move to bat Volpe leadoff to set the table for Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.

Whenever that happens, Sal says the Yanks would officially boast the best 1-3 hitters in baseball.

“At some point he’s gonna be hitting leadoff for this team. When are they going to make that transition?” Sal said. “Once they do, that’s it…Volpe, Soto, Judge, which is the best three in Major League Baseball by far.

“I don’t care what other teams trot out there…Volpe, Soto, Judge is the best top three in all of baseball. But when do they do it? That’s the question.”

Despite that confidence, Sal would wait a bit to move Volpe to leadoff, and make sure some other bats in the bottom half of the order can get going as to not sacrifice production near the bottom of the lineup.

“I just like having the bottom of the order lengthened out,” Sal said. “And I can say that would be the top three in baseball, but I don’t love what’s behind that…you don’t want to be top heavy. I think they can get by with Gleyber or LeMahieu when he comes back…but Volpe being a force at the bottom of the order really lengthens that lineup out.”
