The New York Yankees have had a handful of brutal losses this season, and on Sunday it happened again.
Domingo German was pitching a no-hitter with a 4-0 lead into the eighth inning. The Yankees lost, 5-4.
German, who was on a tight pitch count having not thrown more than 72 pitches in a month until Sunday — allowed a leadoff double in the eighth to Alex Verdugo and was immediately relieved in favor of Jonathan Loaisiga.

Loaisiga allowed a double single, single and double as Boston pulled within 4-3 and was taken out of the game with runners on second and third for Zack Britton.
Britton allowed an RBI groundout to Kevin Plawecki to tie the game, setting up a runner on third and one out. Xander Bogaerts, with first base open and the left-handed hitting Rafael Devers on deck, hit a sac fly to center field to give the Red Sox an improbable 5-4 lead.
It marked the third time this season the Yankees blew a lead of four or more runs in the eighth inning or later, tying a franchise record in a single season.
It was the second game of the four-game set that the Yankees blew in the eighth inning or later, as Chad Green blew a 3-1 lead on Thursday night in a 5-4 extra-inning loss.
Manager Aaron Boone remained optimistic after the game.
“These guys have handled and dealt wit adversity,” he said. “We’ve dealt with it in this series and bounced back. I know we’ll do it again.”
The Yankees won just one of the four games in the series and fell to nine games out of the AL East and remain four games out of the wild card.
The MLB trade deadline is on Friday. Whether or not the Yankees are buyers or sellers remains to be seen.
