Sports 5 Players You Forgot Played for the Braves

5 Players You Forgot Played for the Braves

By Tim Kelly, Audacy

Over the last 25 seasons, the Atlanta Braves have been one of the most successful regular season teams in Major League Baseball, winning 14 division titles. In 1995, "the team of the 90s" broke through and won the World Series. For as much success as the Braves had over the last two-and-a-half decades, Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, Brian McCann and Ronald Acuna Jr. may have made you forget that these former stars had brief stints in Atlanta:

Kenny Lofton

Lofton, who DHL once made an ad mocking how frequently he changed teams, joined the Braves ahead of the 1997 season. The speedy center fielder was sent to Atlanta along with reliever Alan Embree late in spring training of 1997, as the Indians acquired David Justice and Marquis Grissom, a blockbuster deal at the time. Lofton did hit .333 for the Braves in 1997, but also was thrown out 20 times in 42 stolen base attempts. With Andruw Jones emerging as a superstar center fielder, the Braves allowed Lofton to leave in free agency following his lone season with the team. Lofton would return to Cleveland on a three-year/$24 million deal.

Raúl Mondesí

At his peak, Mondesí was a star with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays, one capable of hitting 30 plus home runs and displaying one of the strongest outfield arms in baseball history. However, by the end of his career, he became a journeyman. Atlanta was the final stop on his journey, following stints with the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates and Anaheim Angels. The Braves won 90 games in 2005, but Mondesí hit just .211 in 41 games for the team. He was released in May, as star rookie Jeff Francoeur emerged for the team in right field.

Garret Anderson

One of the greatest position players in the history of the Angels organization, Anderson made three All-Star teams during a very impressive 17-year career. Following 15 seasons with the Angels, the sweet-swinging lefty signed with the Braves in February of 2009. In his age-37 season, Anderson slashed .268/.303/.401 with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs. He would play one more season, spending the 2010 campaign with the Dodgers.

Ben Sheets

Ben Sheets

Sheets' health kept him from having a more extended career, but at his peak, he was one of the very best pitchers in the sport. In 2004, he posted a 2.70 ERA and 8.0 fWAR for the Milwaukee Brewers, with FanGraphs saying that the only pitcher in the sport more valuable than him that season was future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson. Sheets missed the entire 2009 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, ending his time with the Brewers. He caught on with the Oakland Athletics in 2010, but posted a 4.53 ERA in 20 starts and ultimately tore his flexor tendon. After not pitching in 2011, Sheets made the Braves in 2012 following the signing of a minor league deal. He posted a 3.47 ERA in nine games in the 2012 season, but a shoulder injury ended his season and - ultimately - his career.

Lyle Overbay

Lyle Overbay

A very productive player in his prime with the Toronto Blue Jays and Milwaukee Brewers, the Braves inked Overbay to a contract in August of 2012, following his release from the Arizona Diamondbacks. In his age-35 season, Overbay didn't manage to get a call up to the majors by the Braves until September. Overbay would hit just .100 in 20 at-bats with the Braves.
