Perhaps it wouldn't have the same effect as if LeBron James decided to opt out of the NBA bubble, or if Patrick Mahomes decided not to play in the NFL the year following his massive $503 million extension. But any time a sports league's best player is absent, the void is noticeable.

The 2020 MLB season just wouldn't feel the same without Mike Trout acting as the game's face.

But despite previous concerns about his and his family's safety, especially considering his wife's pregnancy, the Angels outfielder told media that he's committed to playing in the shortened 60-game season.

It was a typical way for the humble star to present the news, as he's known to avoid the spotlight and let his game do the talking. Fortunately for Trout, he can do that. His three MVPs, eight All-Star selections, and absurd 72.8 WAR through nine seasons speak for themselves.

Trout is still likely to miss some time due to the delivery of his child, whenever that occurs. However, having him there allows the Angels to have a real chance at a playoff berth in a shortened season where truly anything can happen. I was one of the RADIO.COM writers that selected the Angels as one of the two AL Wild Card teams this season, along with Tom Ackerman of KMOX in St. Louis, Will Burchfield of 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit and Jason Huber of WFNZ in Charlotte. Without Trout? That ain't happening.

Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper is in a similar boat as Trout, as his wife Kayla is pregnant and expecting a baby girl, though later than Trout's wife (in December). He too is expected to play the whole season and will be needed if the Phillies want a real shot in a crowded NL East.
