There are several teams with a legitimate chance at capturing the 2020 NBA Draft's No. 1 overall pick depending on how Thursday night's draft lottery goes. One of the squads with the highest chance of snagging that prize, with a 14 percent likelihood, is the Cleveland Cavaliers. Another of the eight teams with at least a 1-in-20 shot, at 7.5 percent odds, is the Chicago Bulls.
Should that pick fall to either of those two teams, it's not out of the question that they select Georgia's Anthony Edwards. However, a comment he made in a recent interview on Bleacher Report's "Take It There" with Taylor Rooks likely won't endear him to either fan base right away.
That's because the never-ending G.O.A.T. debate was brought up to Edwards, who casually defended his stance on which one deserves the title. His answer? Neither. It's Kevin Durant.
"Because he's seven feet," Edwards explained. "And he can do everything a point guard can do.
"He makes people... miserable when they gotta guard him."
Durant is technically listed at 6-foot-10, but we understand Edwards' high praise nonetheless. However, he took exception to KD's decision to sign with Golden State and create a super team in the process.
"That's the only thing I didn't like about Kevin Durant, when he did that," Edwards said. "I just feel like if you're so good, you should be able to win without three or four other... superstars on the team."
While I don't think the Cavaliers will hold this opinion against him, they would have a tough choice if they did, in fact, receive the first overall pick. The team doesn't necessarily have any gaping positional needs to fill, considering they have young and talented guards in Darius Garland and Collin Sexton, and a duo of star big men in Kevin Love and either Andre Drummond or Tristan Thompson -- it's not impossible, but hard to imagine that they keep both.
What they need is talent, and the best talent available is likely going to be their 2020 Draft strategy. Some view Edwards as that top guy, while others think LaMelo Ball is the clear-cut pick for a team looking at high-ceiling superstars. But after drafting two guards with recent early draft picks, would the Cavs really take another in 2020?
Edwards told Rooks that he's "real cool" with Sexton, and so he'd love to play in Cleveland.
If the Bulls get an early pick, they too would have a decision to make. Coby White and Zach LaVine make for an explosive backcourt, thus potentially negating the need for another guard, though LaVine trade rumors are fairly noisy.
In any event, neither team would be mad about gaining a talent like Anthony Edwards. But they may just have to introduce him to the city's culture before he goes around making claims that neither MJ nor LeBron is the greatest player of all time.
