Knicks legend Patrick Ewing never won an NBA championship, but he did win two gold medals and an NCAA title.
However, there was a moment in time when he had no hardware to show for any of those accomplishments.
The Hall of Famer told a story on “The Dan Patrick Show” Tuesday of how his gold medals from the 1984 and 1992 Olympics and NCAA championship ring were stolen.
“My house got broken into in New York, and at one point they stole my medals,” Ewing said. “I called [former USA Basketball chairman] Jerry Colangelo, and he was great to be able to get me two replacement medals.”
“[Colangelo] took care of me,” Ewing added later in the interview. “He’s a great guy.”
Ewing, who is the current head coach of his alma mater Georgetown, also had the championship ring from his memorable 1984 season with the Hoyas swiped.
“They did take my college championship ring,” Ewing said. “But someone tried to sell it on eBay and I was able to get that back.”
The 57-year-old Ewing acknowledged during the interview that this was the first time he had spoken publicly about losing his gold medals and rings.
“Sometimes it sucks to be well known,” Ewing said.
Ewing spent 15 of his 17 seasons in the NBA with the Knicks after he was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft. An 11-time All-Star, Ewing was inducted into the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
