Dick Gallagher, also known as the "guru of Western New York high school sports," passed away on Monday at the age of 79. He had entered hospice care last week as he battled cancer.
With everyone he met, if you mentioned what school you attended in Western New York, he had a story to tell. Gallagher was a regular on WGR's High School show Saturday mornings, an excellent speaker on youth sports and a great resource and friend to all of the Entercom stations.
Gallagher served as executive director of the New York State Council on Alcoholism, but will be most remembered for two other things: printing and promoting his WNY High School Sports newspaper, which chronicled the high school football and basketball seasons - and his founding of Kids Escaping Drugs program.
Gallagher is a member of both the Section VI Hall of Fame, and was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Halls of Fame in 2003.
