A four-touchdown performance for Josh Allen this past Sunday against the Miami Dolphins was a much-needed boost of confidence for not only the second-year quarterback, but for others that were starting to doubt him as the long-term answer under center for the Buffalo Bills.
Of course, it was against another opponent that is at the bottom of the league standings. Miami is the 29th-ranked passing defense in the NFL.
A major theme of the 2019 season for Allen and the Bills has been taking care of business against weaker teams, but struggling against the league's best.
While their next opponent have just three wins this season, The Denver Broncos' defense is, yet again, a top-five overall unit.
Their passing defense allows just 210.3 yards per-game, which is the fifth-best ranking in the league.
If the Bills want to be seen as contenders to make a deep run in the playoffs, they need their quarterback to show he can produce against a good defense. He hasn't been able to do that this season in three matchups against top-tier defenses.
Against the New England Patriots, the top-ranked defense overall and second-best passing unit, Allen completed just 46.4% of his throws on top of three interceptions. In a six-point loss, Allen's turnovers were a key reason for Buffalo's first loss of the season.
A month later against the 10th-ranked Philadelphia Eagles defense, he was just as inefficient with a 47.1% completion percentage, 169 yards, and a key fumble that set up a go-ahead touchdown for the Eagles.
Just two weeks ago, Cleveland's sixth-best passing defense held Allen to a 53%completion rate, no passing touchdowns, and another crucial fumble while running the football.
The Bills can very well find their way into the postseason without their quarterback lighting up a good defense, but for those that want more out of the 2019 season, the next four games will be crucial.
Allen and the Bills offense will face the fourth, seventh, 14th, 12th, and first-ranked defenses.
No more walks in the park for the Wyoming product.
