Plenty of Jets fans think they’re going to get Aaron Rodgers. Plenty of Raiders fans think they’ll get him, too.
One fanbase is going to be wrong, and Joe Benigno is expecting it to be New York.
Rodgers seems all but certain to be traded by the Packers this offseason. The Jets and Raiders represent the most logical fits, as they’re quarterback-needy teams knocking on the door to becoming playoff contenders.
Meanwhile, players from both teams are beginning to recruit Rodgers to their squad – including his former Packers teammate, Vegas star wideout Davante Adams.
At present, the Jets have a more complete roster than the Raiders and would be a better win-now fit for Rodgers. Still, Benigno said in his weekly spot on “Tiki & Tierney” that he’s not counting on it.
“I don’t expect it to happen. It’s very easy to deal with (the fear of not getting Rodgers),” Benigno said. “When you’re a Jet fan for almost 60 years, I always say this, expect the worst, you’re never disappointed. Not for a second do I think we’re getting Aaron Rodgers. Now, every one of my buddies (is saying) ‘Ah bro, he’s coming, he’s coming’ he’s coming –” wake me up when he’s here. That’s my feeling.
If the Jets miss out on Rodgers, their most reasonable next option probably is the Raiders’ longtime quarterback, Derek Carr.
That’s who Benigno is expecting will be the next Jets quarterback.
“It’s OK. It’s kind of a consolation prize, but yeah, I’ll live with it,” Benigno said of Carr. “I kind of expect it. I’m expecting that. So if I get Aaron Rodgers, then I’m pleasantly surprised.”
