Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - Some more discouraging injury news came from the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, as rookie cornerback Christian Benford has been placed on Injured Reserve.
Benford is dealing with an oblique injury suffered during Thursday's win over the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day. While head coach Sean McDermott said Friday Benford is week-to-week, this roster move will force him to miss, at least, the next four games.
The 22-year-old has been a bright light for the Buffalo secondary that has been missing veteran cornerback Tre'Davious White for a majority of the season. He has appeared in nine games this season, starting five of them, while registering 24 total tackles, one tackle for loss and an interception.
Benford was the Bills' sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Villanova University.
Taking the rookie's spot on the roster is veteran Xavier Rhodes, who has been signed from the practice squad to the active 53-man roster.
Rhodes, 32, is a 10-year veteran of the NFL in his first year with the Bills after being signed earlier this season to the practice squad when injuries at cornerback left the position in need of depth. He's made one appearance this season in game action against the Cleveland Browns, where he registered two tackles.
The Bills have also announced the addition of two players to the practice squad, signing defensive tackle C.J. Brewer and wide receiver John Brown.
Brewer was signed as an undrafted free agent this past offseason out of Coastal Carolina and has already spent some time on the practice squad this season. He's played one game in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans, where he picked up a pair of tackles.
As for Brown, the 32-year-old makes his return to the Bills after a two-year stint in Orchard Park from 2019-20. He bounced around the NFL in 2021 when he spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders, Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In 24 games with the Bills, Brown has registered 42 receptions for 715 yards and caught five touchdowns.
The Bills will return to practice on Sunday, as the team gets ready for its Thursday night matchup in Foxborough, Massachusetts against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium.
