The Buffalo Bills got back to work for a full, padded practice on Monday just one day after a shortened, lighter session in Orchard Park.
Left tackle Dion Dawkins saw his first team reps of camp, rotating in several different times during 11-on-11 work against the defense. Dawkins had missed roughly the first two weeks of training camp while on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, and had only been doing conditioning and individual position work since returning last week.
Cornerback Tre’Davious White was back on the field one day after being excused for personal reasons.
Running back Zack Moss, who missed Friday's game with a hamstring injury, was back at practice in, what appeared to be, a full capacity.
However, wide receiver Stefon Diggs missed another practice as he continues to deal with a knee injury.
Tight end Tommy Sweeney also wasn’t there at all. He was seen in a walking boot on Sunday.
On the field, it was a good back-and-forth between the offense and defense most of the day, with each side winning their share of reps. Quarterback Josh Allen led the offense on a nice two-minute drive that culminated in a touchdown pass to Gabriel Davis, although the defense argued Davis did not get both feet in bounds.
Wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie had a strong morning, catching several passes and really doing good work once he had the ball in his hands after making the grab.
Devin Singletary carried his strong performance in Friday night’s preseason opener against the Detroit Lions into practice on Monday, knifing through holes and into the open field a couple of different times.
The offense also made a couple of big unforced errors, with two botched handoffs coming while two different quarterbacks were running the unit. First, Mitchell Trubisky dropped the ball on an exchange and defensive end A.J. Epenesa picked it up to go the other way for what would’ve been a touchdown.
Almost the exact same thing happened a little bit later when Davis Webb put it on the grass and rookie cornerback Olaijah Griffin snatched it up to take it to the end zone.
It was tough to see in real-time if the quarterback or running back were at fault for either exchange.
Kuechly watches on, helps out
Former Carolina Panthers linebacker and seven-time All-Pro Luke Kuechly was at Bills practice on Monday, closely watching the Bills linebackers and chatting with them one-on-one at times.
Kuechly played for Bills head coach Sean McDermott when McDermott was the defensive coordinator for the Panthers from 2012 to 2016. Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane was the director of football operations in Carolina when the Panthers drafted Kuechly ninth overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, and later served as the team’s assistant general manager.
