Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) - We now know the Von Miller contract numbers with the Buffalo Bills.
The veteran pass rusher signed a six-year, $120 million contract with the club on Thursday. However, according to the websites Spotrac and Over The Cap, who both released contract information Saturday morning, the deal is essentially for three years before the Bills will have an opportunity to move on without taking on a massive dead salary cap hit.
Miller received an $18.525 million signing bonus. That money will be spread out over the life of the six-year contract for salary cap purposes. However, Miller will play on a base salary of only $1.12 million next season, allowing his cap figure to be just north of $5.1 million in 2022, as the Bills stay tight against the salary cap.
The first time Miller's contract has a "cap relief" for the Bills, if they were to release him, is after the 2024 season. Buffalo would clear $13.75 million, but take on a dead cap hit of $7.41 million. Until then, there's pretty much no way, financially, they could absorb the money remaining on the deal.
That means this is essentially a three-year contract, and then the team can revisit their options.
Miller, 32, leads all active NFL players in career sacks with 115.5. He's an eight-time Pro Bowler, a three-time All-Pro, and has won two Super Bowl championships, including this past season with the Los Angeles Rams. He was also named Super Bowl 50 MVP while a member of the Denver Broncos.
Miller will be turning 33-years-old on March 26.
