Five takeaways from Brandon Beane, Joe Brady at NFL Combine

Both the Bills general manager and head coach spoke to the media on Tuesday

Indianapolis, Ind. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - Buffalo Bills general manager and president of football operations Brandon Beane, as well as new head coach Joe Brady spoke to national and local reporters while at the annual NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Here are five takeaways from what they said:

1.) Something will be done with Dawson Knox's contract

Beane acknowledged that Knox's $17 million salary cap hit is a tough number to have him for 2026, but that they'd love to do something to keep him in a Bills uniform. The general manager said they still have a few weeks to figure something out, but need to do that.

2.) It's possible Taron Johnson gets a look at safety

While not saying it will actually happen, Beane said "nothing's off the table" when asked if it's possible Johnson could move to safety. He noted new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard's defense may not use a nickel cornerback as much as the Bills have in the past.

3.) Brady will let Leonhard do his thing

Brady said one of the biggest changes for him now as a head coach has been sitting in on defensive meetings. But he says he's done it more to "learn the language" of what Leonhard is doing and calling.

We already knew Brady would call plays on offense and run that side of the ball. It's clear he won't be entertaining doing anything like that on defense, and feels he needs to let Leonhard run it and call it as he sees fit.

4.) Team wants Keon Coleman to take advantage of opportunity

After Brady said in January the best thing to happen to Keon Coleman was him becoming head coach, Beane said there are coaches on staff excited to work with and mold Coleman. He added, though, Coleman just can't let maturity issues off the field get in the way of his on-field play.

5.) Update on injured players

Beane gave an update on several players who suffered season-ending injures this past season. He wouldn't put a specific timeline on the return of kicker Tyler Bass (sports hernia), defensive end Landon Jackson (knee) or defensive end Michael Hoecht (Achilles), but said Bass is the closest to returning.
