Gabriel Davis wanted to improve his route running this offseason, and the young Buffalo Bills wide receiver certainly found himself a great teacher.
Davis, who enjoyed a standout rookie season in 2020, told reporters on Tuesday he worked with Stefon Diggs to improve his game this offseason.
“We met down in Florida a little bit, ran some routes and did some things to freshen it up,” Davis said following practice. “I went out there with Diggs. Running some routes, cleaning up some things, trying to work on my game a little bit. Diggs is a big help. He has a different style of play than I do. So I’m always trying to pick his brain on what he likes to do and watching what he does and trying to add that to my arsenal.”
Diggs certainly has a lot to offer. The All-Pro wideout led the league in receptions (127) and yards (1,535) last season. He was the perfect target for Josh Allen, who finished second in MVP voting in his third NFL season.
But with John Brown moving on, the Bills are hoping to develop another explosive receiver. While Cole Beasley has enjoyed two breakout campaigns in Buffalo, he works out of the slot. Veteran Emmanuel Sanders has a decorated resume, but the 34-year-old is coming off his worst season since 2012.
This is where Davis comes in.
The 2020 fourth-round pick was second on the team with seven receiving touchdowns, and third on Buffalo’s roster with 599 yards. He was also on the field for 73% of the Bills’ offensive snaps — second only to Diggs.
“I want to be able to make everything look the same, disguise every single route, be able to keep my shoulders square and be able to break off one foot,” Davis said. "That’s all I’ve been working on.”
Favorites to win the AFC East, the Bills will need their offense to, once again, be explosive if they want to embark on another deep playoff run. Adding an improved Davis to the mix only makes Allen’s weapons more tantalizing.
