McDermott excited to work closer with defensive staff

Bills head coach Sean McDermott knows his strong staff will help him while calling defensive plays

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - With the NFL Draft just over a week away, the Buffalo Bills will be working with some significant changes on the defensive side of the ball.

Perhaps the biggest loss on the defense heading into 2023 was defensive coordinator making the decision to step away from coaching for the season. Then in free agency, another key leader of the defense moved on, as linebacker Tremaine Edmunds elected to sign with the Chicago Bears.

With Frazier stepping away in 2023, head coach Sean McDermott has elected to call defensive plays this season, which he has not done since being the defensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers in 2016.

McDermott knows he has a good staff behind him on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

“I wouldn’t be able to do this without a really strong staff on the defensive side, in particular in this case,” said McDermott during his press conference on Tuesday in Orchard Park.

McDermott also knows he has to have a “two track mind” being a head coach and a defensive coordinator. He is excited to be calling the plays for the defense, and met with the defensive coaches on Monday.

The Bills head coach says being back in a defensive coordinator position feels natural after serving in the same role with Carolina, and before that with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“It’s part of how I got here,” McDermott said. “I just think being in the defensive staff room, having those critical conversations that come up, solving problems trying to evolve where we need to evolve.”

With the loss of Edmunds in free agency, McDermott knows there has not been anyone that has proven they can be the starting middle linebacker. He also feels it is exciting for players to show the coaches what they have in order to earn a starting spot.

“When you wear that hat, that middle linebacker position, there’s a lot that goes with it. Not necessarily play calling, but more checking the defense, communication and all that goes with it,” McDermott said.
