Since Bills head coach Sean McDermott last spoke with the media, the team has lost one of their biggest pieces on defense with linebacker Tremaine Edmunds signing as a free agent with the Chicago Bears. That move now opens up a gaping hole in the middle of the defense.

While the Bills have not added to the linebacker position since the start of free agency nearly two weeks ago, the team has re-signed linebackers Tyrel Dodson and Tyler Matakevich, though both players have largely served as special teams players in their tenures in Buffalo.

In addition, the Bills also have a couple of other younger options to fill the void down the middle with 2022 third-round pick Terrel Bernard and 2022 seventh-round pick Baylon Spector.

McDermott is excited to have competition at middle linebacker, and knows there will be a lot of leadership that will go into filling that role.

“There’s a lot of communication that goes into it, a lot of leading by example that goes into it in the the offseason, Monday through Saturday,” McDermott said at the NFL league meetings on Monday.

Over the last several years, McDermott has raved about Edmunds and the role he played with the Bills for five seasons. Despite his departure from Buffalo, the Bills head coach wishes for nothing but the best for his former first-round pick (16th overall) in 2018.

“He’s unselfish, he’s a person you can trust. I can’t say enough good things about him,” McDermott said.
