Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - The Buffalo Bills pulled out an impressive 48-20 win on Sunday over the Miami Dolphins to improve to 3-1 on the year. The win puts the Bills atop the AFC East for the first time this season.
It was an efficient afternoon for the Buffalo offense, as the unit put up 424 total yards on the day.
It was quarterback Josh Allen leading the way for the Bills again with 320 passing yards and four touchdowns, and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. In addition, Stefon Diggs had another stellar performance with 120 yards receiving and three touchdowns on just six catches.
As for the Buffalo defense, that unit had a great day as well, forcing two turnovers and sacking Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa four times. Linebacker Terrel Bernard had another fumble recovery, while safety Micah Hyde came up with the interception, and pass rusher Greg Rousseau had two of the team's four sacks.
Bills head coach Sean McDermott knew the Dolphins were going to be a tough opponent, but he was very happy with how his team stepped up on both sides of the ball to ensure a win.
"A phenomenal job," said McDermott following Sunday's victory. "Like I told the team, the defense was reeling early, we couldn't stop 'em early through the first two drives, but our offense was rolling. They held serve while we could get our way about us, and that was just as important as anything. Then you can go put up 48 points, that doesn't happen real easily. That's a good defense, [defensive coordinator Vic] Fangio is a great defensive coordinator. I'm real proud of how the offense played. They were top shelf today."
The Bills defense did see a few players getting banged up throughout the afternoon, but one injury could be quite significant for the long-term success of the unit. Late in the third quarter, cornerback Tre'Davious White suffered an Achilles injury that could be a season-ender.
Despite the injury to White, McDermott says it did not phase the Bills, because of their mentality coming into the game.
"We had a couple of those types of instances, at least on defense. I'm not sure if we had some on offense also, but we were next man up type of deal," he said. "I thought that was important, because the backups at those said positions were ready to go. You don't wanna take that for granted either, because they gotta be physically ready and mentally ready to step in and do their 1/11th, and they did it."
McDermott noted the Bills played great complementary football throughout the game. He also pointed out how the team settled into their game plan early and stuck to it.
"Players have settled in. I didn't call anything differently. Overall, the guys just did a really good job of settling down, catching their breath a little bit," McDermott said. "It's a fast offense, they do a lot of motioning and movement. So I think it's hard to simulate that in practice, and so I think when it first started on us, it had us on our heels a little bit. But they stuck with the process, stayed resilient. Again, we played complementary football, really throughout the entire afternoon."
