OPINION: 'Twas the Night Before Buffalo Sports Christmas - 2020

It's become an annual Christmas Eve tradition

’Twas the night before Christmas in the City of Good Neighbors.
It’s been a rough few months, not able to watch our Sabres.

But the Bills on the other hand, they’re having an excellent season.
We all needed something to cheer about, and they gave us good reason.

In January, in Houston, they lost a heartbreaking game.
After a blown halftime lead, Josh Allen took a lot of blame.

Beane and McDermott knew what they had to do.
Get him a No. 1 wideout, add a weapon or two.

So they traded for Stefon Diggs, one of the best in the league.
Was he a diva? Would he fit in? There was a lot of intrigue.

We know how that worked out, he’s already passed Eric Moulds
And with two more games left, who knows how it unfolds?

They drafted Davis and Moss and used everything on the table.
It’s why other teams might want their new head coach to be Brian Daboll.

Allen’s hot start was a fluke many said, Bills fans were sure to remember.
So now they’re tweeting at ‘em all: “how you like him in December?”

4,000 yards, 39 touchdowns, and a record of 11-and-3.
No wonder when he got off the plane fans were chanting “M-V-P.”

Winning the East was the stated goal for which they would strive.
Then they went out and did it! Their first division title since 1995.

All over Western New York, it was such an incredible feeling.
Now we’re all wondering, “just how high is this team’s ceiling?”

Now to the Sabres, firing Botterill was a major offseason move.
They replaced him with Kevyn Adams, most said “he’s got a lot to prove.”

He came in and traded for the veteran Eric Staal
Then he shocked the league by signing former MVP, Taylor Hall.

Additions on the blue line hope to get the defense shinin’.
But as usual, we’ll all keep wondering, “will they trade Ristolainen?”

Hopefully Jeff Skinner can get back to scoring goals.
That would go a long way in covering some other holes.

They still have Dahlin, Reinhart, and of course Jack Eichel.
The goal is to finish top-four, and end this no playoff cycle.

We now know the start date, Jan. 14 against the "Caps".
And with only 56 games, there’s no time for a lapse.

Now to college football, where UB was good once again.
They even cracked the top-25, a place they had never been.

The touchdowns kept coming and the wins kept getting piled.
All while Jaret Patterson was breaking records and running wild.

A bowl game for a third straight year is truly something to behold.
Congratulations to AD Mark Alnutt and head coach Lance Leipold!

The local college hoops teams all had their own journey.
But unfortunately for all of us there was no NCAA tourney.

For baseball, we waited 119 days.
When it finally got started, we said, "Welcome to the Buffalo Blue Jays!"

What a great job by the Bisons, they pulled it off without a hitch.
How great was that to see for Bob and Mindy Rich?

There’s no getting around it, this was a really tough year.
But look up ahead, there’s going to be plenty to cheer.

So for all of these reasons good and bad, 2020 we will never forget.
But I’m telling you right now, 2021 will be the best one yet!

Merry Christmas!
