With no Josh Allen, Bills backup quarterbacks get plenty of work

The team held it's only media-open session of OTAs this week

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - After getting married in Southern California this past weekend, it was no surprise that Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen wasn't on the field for Tuesday's session of Organized Team Activities (OTAs) in Orchard Park.

But Allen's absence gave more opportunity for his three backups to get more than their usual share of reps in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills during the lone media-open session of OTAs this week.

While Mitch Trubisky, Mike White and Shane Buechele all made their share of throws and plays, there was obviously a noticeable difference with the offense without Allen.

Something specific that stuck out was the other quarterbacks not getting rid of the ball quick enough, and allowing the pass rush to get close.

Players on both sides are only wearing helmets, with no other pads, and obviously quarterbacks are not going to be touched, so plays often stay alive even when they'd normally be sacks.

With that in mind, there were plenty of balls caught by tight ends and running backs, who often acted as a check-down or quick-hitter for the play.

Tight ends Dalton Kincaid, Dawson Knox and Zach Davidson all had grabs down the field for big gains. Rookie Jackson Hawes, known more as a blocking tight end, even had a nice catch and run.

Allen wasn't the only player not in attendance for the voluntary session on Tuesday. Neither were running back James Cook, once again, or defensive back Cam Lewis.

Defensive end Joey Bosa, who is out with a calf injury, as well as linebacker Baylon Spector, safety Damar Hamlin and offensive tackle Spencer Brown were all there, but stood on the sidelines with no helmet.

Nickel cornerback Taron Johnson wore a red non-contact jersey, but participated. After practice, Johnson told Katherine Fitzgerald of The Buffalo News he tore his labrum last year, so he got it repaired via surgery during the offseason.

Wide receiver Joshua Palmer did individual position work, but eventually came out and did not take any team reps that I saw. He stayed on the sidelines, though, with his helmet, and told me afterwards he was fine.
