Jerry Jones explains why Cowboys haven't signed Odell Beckham Jr. yet

CeeDee Lamb had another sharp showing Sunday, and another talented pass-catcher could soon be joining him in the Cowboys offense.

Lamb caught 11 of his 15 targets for 150 yards with a pair of touchdowns in Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. He has at least 70 yards receiving in six of his nine games this season, and has a large target share every week.

“CeeDee Lamb, for instance, had the best game that I’ve ever seen him play for the Cowboys,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday in his weekly appearance on “Shan and RJ.” “And man, is that encouraging to see him playing at that particular level. Except for the connection on those two interceptions, except for that, CeeDee played the best I’ve ever seen him play. I don’t know that anybody can play better.”

However, there isn’t much star power below Lamb on the depth chart. Of late though, the Cowboys have been linked to Odell Beckham Jr, with Michael Irvin saying last month that Beckham would love to play for the Cowboys. The wideout remains a free agent as he finishes rehabbing the torn ACL he sustained in the Super Bowl with the Rams.

Adding Beckham would give the Cowboys a potential No. 2 wideout behind Lamb, which could help free up Noah Brown and Michael Gallup by getting them softer matchups.

Even if Lamb keeps playing at a high level, that won’t prompt the Cowboys to rethink their approach with Beckham.

“A talent like Beckham is additive, and it just stacks on top of whatever. We’ve thought a lot of CeeDee, your question was does the performance – no. We talk and think a lot of what he’s been for this team, and Beckham is really the whole nature of it is can he get us substantively above where we are. And the answer is we’ll see how that is.

The Cowboys clearly seem interested in Beckham, and the feeling apparently is mutual.

So, why hasn’t there been a signing yet?

“Well, first of all, in this particular case, start by asking why is it that you’re able to sign him. Ask that question, why?" Jones said. "Because he’s not on a team at this time of year, a player of that caliber, that’s rare. Trading is over.

“Well, it is because we’re dealing with a situation where he’s free, but potentially very capable of helping a team right now win and play, and him play at a high level. That will tell you alone it is a rarified set of circumstances, and those don’t just happen or this wouldn’t be possible.”

Beckham reportedly is hoping to sign by the end of the month. It appears he’ll have plenty of suitors because, as Jones alluded to, having a high-end skill player available to sign this late in the season isn’t something overly common.
