Sabres dropped by white-hot Avalanche

Buffalo drops to 1-1-0 on their current road trip after a 4-1 loss in Colorado

Thanks to a run of three unanswered goals, the Colorado Avalanche did to the Buffalo Sabres what they've been doing to every opponent that's stepped foot on the ice of Ball Arena in Denver - they beat them.

The blue and gold were the latest in a long line of 18-consecutive victims on Colorado's home ice to come out on the wrong end of a final score. On Sunday night, it was a 4-1 final favoring the Avalanche.

The Avalanche opened the scoring in the first period. Captain Gabriel Landeskog got things started with his 19th goal of the season with help from winger Mikko Rantanen.

The Sabres found the equalizer in the second period of play, when Dylan Cozens connected with a loose puck in front of Avalanche goalie Darcy Kuemper for his 11th goal of the campaign.

Unfortunately for Buffalo, the Avalanche scored two more goals before period's end. Resurgent veteran Nazem Kadri potted his 18th goal of the season at even strength, while less than two minutes later Rantanen cashed in on his 23rd.

Rantanen's tally came on a power play given to Colorado after Sabres head coach Don Granato's decision to challenge Kadri's goal was unsuccessful. Granato and co. looked for a reversal on the scoring play, as it appeared a hand pass led to the goal.

The only goal in the third period came courtesy of Colorado forward Valeri Nichuskin, who won the race to a loose puck with the Sabres' net empty. Nichuskin and the Avalanche withstood a 6-on-4 Sabres advantage in the waning moments of the contest, en route to the 4-1 final score.
