Sabres sign defenseman Gavin McCarthy to three-year entry-level contract

The Clarence Center native is expected to finish the 2025-26 season in Rochester

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - The Buffalo Sabres have signed defensive prospect Gavin McCarthy to his three-year entry-level contract, as the team announced on Tuesday.

McCarthy just wrapped up his junior season at Boston University, where he served as team captain this year while producing 21 points (4+17) in 36 games with the Terriers.

Over his three seasons playing collegiately in Boston, the 20-year-old scored eight goals and added 34 assists for 42 points in 113 games played.

The 6-foot-2, 187-pound right-shot defenseman also got the chance earlier this winter to play in the Spengler Cup as part of the U.S. Collegiate Selects team, where he scored a goal in four games played.

The native of Clarence Center was originally Buffalo's third-round pick (86th overall) in the 2023 NHL Draft.

It is expected for McCarthy to finish his 2025-26 season in the American Hockey League with the Rochester Americans.
