A 25 year old man from Berwick has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of threatening the President of the United States. The US Attorney for the Middle District alleges Robert Vargo sent a letter to the Washington DC office of Congressman Bennie Thompson threatening to kill him, his family, President Biden and US District Court Judge Robert Mariani. The letter alluded to "Anthrax" and contained what appeared to be a white powder. It was determined the powder was not a safety hazard and that the letter was sent from the Luzerne County Correctional Facility. If found guilty he could face up to 25 years in prison. Vargo had escaped from the Luzerne County Facility while working on a work detail back in July. He was taken into custody three days later near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He pled guilty to the escape charge earlier this month and is scheduled on that charge in December.
