Today is the final day for Lackawanna County property owners to appeal their reassessments. Appeals must be filed with the County Assessor’s Office in Scranton or sent by mail, and there is a $35 filing fee.
County officials say about 3,500 property owners have already submitted appeals. Once an appeal is filed, a hearing will be scheduled, and property owners can expect a decision within a few weeks.
The reassessment process, which determines updated property values for tax purposes, has been ongoing for several months and has generated significant interest from homeowners and businesses across the county. There has not been a reassessment in Lackawanna County since 1968.
