A sudden snow squall on Monday morning is believed to have contributed to a fatal crash in lower Luzerne County, claiming the life of a Pocono Lake man.
The single-vehicle accident occurred on the ramp from Interstate 81 South to Interstate 80 East near the Route 93 (Conyngham) exit in Butler Township. The Luzerne County Coroner has identified the victim as 70-year-old Timothy Yerger of Pocono Lake. The crash happened early Monday morning on the I-80 East ramp along I-81 South. Reports indicate the vehicle was a dump truck, which flipped over during the incident. State Police suggest that a brief, intense snow squall moving through the area at the time caused reduced visibility and slick conditions, creating problems for drivers. The official cause of the deadly crash remains under active investigation by authorities.
The ramp was closed for several hours as emergency crews worked the scene and investigators documented the wreckage. It has since reopened. Police are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution when navigating sudden changes in weather, particularly during the winter months.
