SCRANTON, PA — Eight individuals, including several residents of Luzerne County, have been indicted by a federal grand jury on wide-ranging drug trafficking and firearms charges following a major regional law enforcement operation.
The 21-count indictment, announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, alleges that the group conspired to distribute and possess significant quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl across Northeastern Pennsylvania from August 2025 through September 2026.
Among those charged is 51-year-old Michael Rinaldi of Philadelphia. According to public court filings cited by federal prosecutors, Rinaldi was previously convicted in 2021 on federal drug distribution charges and sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison. His sentence was commuted by former President Joe Biden in January 2025, after which federal authorities allege he resumed large-scale narcotics operations.
The multi-agency investigation involved federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies targeting regional pipeline distribution from Philadelphia into Luzerne and surrounding counties. In addition to conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, several co-defendants face illegal firearms possession and weapon-trafficking charges tied to the narcotics network.
If convicted, the defendants face mandatory minimum sentences ranging from 10 years to life in federal prison, depending on their individual criminal histories and the specific counts charged.
