EXETER, PA — Students and staff at Wyoming Area Catholic School were safely evacuated Tuesday morning after an electrical issue on the roof sparked a fire, filling portions of the building with smoke. Emergency crews responded around 10:00 a.m. to the school facility located on Wyoming Avenue in Exeter, where firefighters quickly worked to bring the blaze under control.
School administrators and teachers initiated evacuation procedures immediately after noticing flickering lights and smoke in the lower-grade hallway, successfully clearing all occupants from the building within minutes. Evacuees were transported to the neighboring Wyoming Area Secondary School, where staff and local law enforcement coordinated reunification with families. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among students, faculty, or responding emergency personnel.
While the fire was contained primarily to the roof and two classrooms, the structure sustained noticeable smoke and water damage. Officials with the Diocese of Scranton announced that classes will remain canceled through the Labor Day weekend as restoration professionals and the state police fire marshal assess the building. Temporary classroom space has been offered by Saint Maria Goretti Parish in Laflin to allow instruction to resume next week while repairs are underway.
