TREMONT TOWNSHIP — U.S. Senator John Fetterman is requesting more information from the Department of Homeland Security regarding two massive ICE facilities recently purchased in Schuylkill and Berks counties. The federal government acquired a former Big Lots distribution center in Tremont Township and a second warehouse in Upper Bern Township for more than $200 million, with plans to convert both into immigration enforcement processing centers. In a letter addressed to Secretary Kristi Noem, Fetterman expressed deep concern that these large-scale operations were planned without input from local or state officials.
The Senator highlighted that the Schuylkill County facility alone is expected to hold 7,500 detainees, a population shift that officials say would quadruple the township’s existing public infrastructure burden. Fetterman warned that the sudden demand on water, sewage, and emergency services could significantly diminish the quality of life for current residents. Additionally, the federal acquisition of these properties will result in an estimated $1.6 million annual loss in local tax revenue, further straining the budgets of local school districts and municipalities. Fetterman is now calling for a full impact assessment and a briefing on why these specific locations were chosen.
