Authorities in Hazleton have confirmed that the fire which destroyed a centuries-old church Saturday night is now being investigated as a case of arson. According to the Hazleton fire chief, the flames were intentionally set at the long-abandoned building, which had not been in use since the late 1990s.
Officials said the site had become a frequent gathering spot for homeless individuals. The blaze also caused significant smoke damage to the Hazleton Area Public Library, located next door. Library officials announced the building will remain closed until further notice while cleanup and repairs are completed.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the fire to contact Hazleton police.
