Pennsylvania State Treasurer and Republican gubernatorial candidate Stacy Garrity has launched a petition calling for an immediate pause on data center development across the commonwealth. Garrity announced the initiative on Thursday, emphasizing that a freeze on these energy-intensive facilities is necessary until safeguards are established to protect families, taxpayers, consumers, and utility ratepayers. Data centers have rapidly emerged as a contentious political issue in Pennsylvania, with residents and municipal leaders sounding the alarm over their massive power demands, environmental footprint, zoning conflicts, and local tax implications.
The call for a development freeze comes directly on the heels of Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro’s introduction of the new Responsible Infrastructure Development, or GRID, standards. While Shapiro's administration designed those metrics to establish clearer accountability and expectations for technology developers seeking state incentives, Garrity and other critics argue that the standards do not go far enough to shield local communities from skyrocketing utility bills and strain on the electrical grid.
