Gov. Shapiro sues Trump Administration over voter info demands

Commonwealth Media for Governor Josh Shapiro

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro announced Monday that he is filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration, taking legal action to prevent the federal government from seizing the personal information of Commonwealth residents.

Shapiro stated that federal authorities cannot unlawfully demand or confiscate voter data or personal information from Pennsylvania citizens. While the governor's office did not immediately provide granular details on the specific data requests in question, the suit directly challenges federal efforts to compel states to submit sensitive voter registration lists and personal details of poll workers.

The legal challenge marks the latest clash between Harrisburg and Washington. Just last month, Shapiro sued the Trump administration over what he characterized as an "illegal effort" to freeze federal homeland security funding. State officials argued the administration was attempting to hold those security grants hostage to force changes to local election administration and voting policies. Shapiro maintains that Pennsylvania will continue to resist federal overreach regarding state-managed election systems and resident privacy.
