SCRANTON, PA — A homicide case against a Dunmore man accused of fatally shooting his wife will proceed to Lackawanna County Court, following a preliminary hearing on Tuesday. Magisterial District Judge Sean McGraw ruled there was sufficient evidence to support charges against Maxwell Hawkins, who is accused of killing his wife, Nicole Vega, while their children were present.

Police discovered Vega's body in a pool of blood next to a loaded handgun at the couple's residence on January 3. Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland officially ruled the death a homicide caused by a single gunshot wound to the head, leading to the upgrading of charges against Hawkins.

During the hearing, prosecutors presented evidence that they say links Hawkins to the crime. His defense attorney argued that the evidence was circumstantial. Following Judge McGraw's ruling, Hawkins was remanded to the Lackawanna County Prison, where he is being held without bail. The case will now be scheduled for a formal arraignment and trial in Lackawanna County Court.
