Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti officially launched her campaign for the 8th Congressional District today, announcing her bid as the sole Democratic candidate in the upcoming primary. Speaking at the Pennsylvania State Education Association building in Luzerne County, Cognetti solidified her position in the race and immediately pivoted toward the general election. During her remarks, she focused her attention on the Republican incumbent, Representative Rob Bresnahan, specifically criticizing his history of stock trading as a point of contention for voters.

The announcement quickly drew a sharp rebuttal from the incumbent's camp. Chris Pack, a spokesperson for Representative Bresnahan, dismissed the Mayor’s criticisms and labeled her a Goldman Sachs private wealth advisor who is intentionally taking the Congressman's previous comments out of context to gain political leverage. With Cognetti clearing the field on the Democratic side, the stage is now set for a high-stakes challenge against Bresnahan. Although the primary will formalize her candidacy, the general election remains eight months away as both sides prepare for a long and competitive campaign season.
