President Joe Biden has commuted the sentence for former Luzerne County judge Michael Conahan, who was sentenced for his role in the infamous Kids-for-Cash scandal in September of 2011. The 72 year old Conahan was convicted along with former judge Mark Ciavarella Jr. of sending juveniles to for-profit prisons in exchange for millions of dollars in kickbacks. Conahan was released from prison to home confinement in 2020 because of COVID-19 health concerns. With the remainder of his sentence commuted, Conahan is now a free man.
