Lackawanna County Commissioners are expected to release their draft version of the preliminary 2025 county budget today. Not many specifics of the budget have been released including the amount of an expected tax hike for property owners. Democratic Majority Commissioners Bill Gaughan and Matt McGloin have said a tax increase is necessary for the county’s fiscal stability. Republican Minority Commissioner Chris Chermak has said he will not back a tax increase. The coming tax hike, the second in as many years, will deliver new revenue for the county that could otherwise face a projected $27.2 million structural deficit next year.
