WILKES-BARRE — Luzerne County officials are investigating a "data security event" after a hacker gained unauthorized access to a county email account last week. The incident, which is being treated as a potential data breach, has prompted a full investigation.
According to a statement from Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo, there is currently no evidence that any private or personal information from the compromised account has been used in an unauthorized manner. However, the county is taking the matter seriously and is working to determine the extent of the breach.
Crocamo stated that if the investigation reveals that any personal information was compromised, the affected individuals will be promptly notified. The county has not released any further details about the nature of the breached email account or how the hacker was able to gain access.
