SUGARLOAF TOWNSHIP, PA — A growing coalition of Luzerne County property owners is pushing back against PPL Electric Utilities over plans to construct a massive high-voltage transmission line, raising serious concerns about property values, quality of life, and neighborhood impact.
PPL has initiated eminent domain proceedings against 30 property owners in the area to expand an existing right-of-way corridor. The proposed Sugarloaf Transmission Project would introduce a 500-kilovolt transmission line mounted on steel structures averaging 200 feet tall.
The dispute centers on whether PPL can legally acquire the land needed for the expansion. The utility company maintains the line is essential for regional grid reliability and supporting future economic growth, but affected residents argue the project poses a direct threat to their homes and land investments.
The ultimate decision rests with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), which must determine if PPL meets the standard to exercise eminent domain for the project. The case remains actively litigated, with property owners expecting administrative law judges to conduct on-site visits to the affected parcels before making a ruling.
If the PUC grants approval, PPL anticipates beginning construction on the transmission project as early as next year.
