Hundreds of workers in Luzerne County are facing sudden unemployment after the UK-based retailer Wren Kitchens announced the immediate closure of its United States operations on Thursday. The decision resulted in the total shutdown of the company's manufacturing plant in Wilkes-Barre Township, as well as its local showrooms and design studios.
Former employees reported that the announcement came without any prior warning, with many learning they were out of a job only as the workday was ending. The company, which specializes in custom-fitted kitchen cabinets, had established its North American headquarters and a major manufacturing presence in the Sugar Notch and Hanover Township areas in 2020.
A notice appeared on the company's website informing customers and staff that all U.S. showrooms and studios are now closed. While the retailer continues to operate in the United Kingdom, no specific reason was provided for the sudden withdrawal from the American market.
The closure also affects several locations across Lehigh County and other states where the company had recently expanded. Impacted workers expressed frustration over the lack of notice, noting that they were given no time to prepare for the loss of their livelihoods.
